Ferns’ Story

For more than a century, the corner at the heart of Carlisle has been home to a country store in one form or another. The site has seen many chapters, from Carlisle Suprette and a gas station to a post office and general store, always serving as a gathering place for neighbors.

In more recent decades, it became known as Ferns Country Store & Deli, offering groceries, sandwiches, coffee, and conversation. Ferns wasn’t just a stop for essentials - it was part of Carlisle’s daily rhythm, the place where kids grabbed candy after school and cyclists refueled.

The store closed in May 2025, marking the end of one era, but the beginning of another. The past few months have been focused on planning for Ferns’ future: listening to the community, addressing long-term building and environmental needs, and re-imagining what this special place can become.

Now, with that input and renewed vision, we’re working to bring Ferns back - rooted in its history, shaped by the town’s voices, and built to serve Carlisle for generations to come.

Our Vision for Ferns

We’re building a Ferns that honors its past and looks toward the future - a place where good food, everyday essentials, and friends meet.

Plans include:

  • A modern kitchen serving coffee, baked goods, breakfast, smoothies, açaí bowls, sandwiches, bowls, pizzas, and family-friendly meals.

  • A true general store with the basics: milk, eggs, bread, butter (and the candy you remember!).

  • Fresh, locally grown produce and goods from area farms and makers.

  • A responsibly run beer & wine shop.

  • Expanded patios and comfortable seating.

To get it right, we’re working with experienced hospitality designers and local partners to preserve Ferns’ classic country charm while meeting modern kitchen, health, and water standards.

What’s Next

We’re now focused on environmental remediation, design development, and finalizing the next steps that will set Ferns up for long-term success.

Our team is working closely with state and local experts to navigate remediation, well and septic upgrades, and infrastructure improvements, all necessary steps before construction can begin.

Stay tuned for updates on our progress, and thank you for helping shape the future of Ferns.
